Words That Build, Not Break

Kindness is often underestimated. We think of it as something small, something optional. Yet, the truth is, kindness has the power to shape a person’s day, or even their life. And much of that power lies in our words.
Every word we speak carries weight. Some words breathe life, spark hope, and remind people of their worth. Other words cut deep, leaving wounds that aren’t easily healed. The choice is always ours: to build up or to tear down.
Think about it. A simple “I believe in you” said to a teenager struggling in school can change the way they approach their next test. A “thank you, I see how hard you’re working” spoken to a colleague can rekindle their motivation when they were ready to give up. Even a small “you’re doing great as a mom” whispered to a parent in the supermarket can turn exhaustion into renewed strength.
I once saw this firsthand. A friend of mine was on the verge of leaving a project because they felt unnoticed and unappreciated. Before they could make their decision, someone from the team sent them a message that simply said: “We need you. You bring something to this group no one else can.” That single message stopped them from walking away. The right words, spoken at the right time, became a lifeline.
Kindness is not just about the big gestures; it’s about hunting for opportunities to be a blessing in the small, everyday moments. The cashier at the supermarket
who looks worn out—what if you looked them in the eye and said, “Thank you for serving us with patience today.” The coworker who always does the behind-the-scenes work—what if you said, “I notice what you do, and it matters.” The neighbor who feels invisible—what if you greeted them by name and asked how they’re doing?
Our words cost us nothing, but they can give someone else courage, dignity, and strength. Proverbs says it best: “The tongue has the power of life and death.” When we choose life, we don’t just lift others—we lift ourselves too.
So here’s the challenge: every day, look for one person to encourage, one life to bless, one heart to build up. You’ll be surprised how much difference it makes—not just in their life, but in yours.
